John B. Hightower describes his early interest in the arts, including his tenure at the New York State Council on the Arts and his contact there with Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller. Appointed Director of The Museum of Modern Art during the turbulent 1960's, Hightower reflects on the condition and events of the era such as the Vietnam War, social and labor unrest, and their influence on Museum policies and programs. The establishment of The Museum of Modern Art Professional and Administrative Staff Association (PASTA) formed during Hightower's directorship is mentioned.

On May 1, 1970, John Brantley Hightower (1933-) succeeded Bates Lowry as Director of The Museum of Modern Art. He resigned on January 5, 1972, at which time Richard E. Oldenburg was named Acting Director.
